Montegrappa's new limited edition Bijo-To-Yaju reproduces fragments of the Beauty and the Beast story through Japanese cultural equivalents. It has been created in collaboration with Japanese designer Tomita Kazuhiko.
Made of vermeil and acrylic, Bijo-To-Yaju is a piece of art that breaks many of the accepted conventions in writing design. The concept of Bijo-To-Yaju, part pen and part fairy tale, fuses Japanese art with European narrative, drawing attention to the universal principles of heroism, beauty and love.
The golden key featured in Cocteau's film is affixed to the top of the body and corresponds to a lock incorporated into the cap ring. Both elements are cast in vermeil and offer a veiled commentary on forbidden love.
Bijo-To-Yaju is a limited edition of 222 fountain pens and 99 rollerballs, and is delivered in a custom wooden box inspired by the stepped roofs of a Japanese castle.
