This Namiki Emperor Owl fountain pen features the Rankaku and Togidashi-Taka Maki-e techniques. With the Rankaku technique, the design is created from small pieces or powder of quail eggshells. It is embedded on the lacquered surface and coated with lacquer. Then, the lacquer surface is polished to reveal the design. In this piece, the silhouette of the owl is crafted using this technique by the artisan Yutaka. By completing the background and other elements of the scene using Togidashi Maki-e techniques, greater emphasis is given to the main design using other materials like lacquer and charcoal powder. The design is then finished using the same techniques as in Hira (flat) Maki-e. The result is an impression of majestic opulence. In Japan, owls bring luck and offer protection against suffering.
